Watkins Glen Pre-Race

Watkins Glen!

By Dave Spaw

Hey NASCAR fans! It’s time again for road racing action at Watkins Glen International, the challenging 2.45-mile, Lysol 200 road course. It is the only road racing event on the Busch series schedule and the CTS Team will be there in full force with driver Mike Stefanik at the helm of "Luther", the Coyne Textile Services Chevrolet #90 road race car.

The CTS team will be put to the test this weekend with all the special preparations for road racing. The road racing cars are set up different than the normal circle track cars. They have special steering, different transmissions, a brake light, windshield wipers and defrosters. The road course is run rain or shine and the teams also have special rain tires standing by in the event of rain. Another difference is the cars come into the pits from the opposite way than on a circle track. Therefore, the car has the fuel port on the right side of the car instead of the left. The team has also been practicing pit stops with the car coming into the pit stall from the left rather than from the right and changing the left side tires first instead of the right. This might sound like it can get confusing, but the team has been here before and Mike has raced here many times.

Mike says he likes racing road courses. He has competed at other road courses such as Lime Rock, Topeka and Portland, but he likes Watkins Glen the best. He has raced here 12 times before. In the Busch North series, he was a former track record holder, qualified on the pole and had a best 6th place finish. In the NASCAR modified series he also won 2 races. After testing here two weeks ago Mike feels he has a good handling car for this weekend’s race. " Our test went real well. We gained a lot from where we started and I feel we have the car well balanced in terms of braking and handling. It drives good through the corners and just feels great."

Coyne Textile Services is the largest independently owned industrial laundry operation in the United States, with 44 locations serving nearly 50,000 customers in 26 states including the District of Columbia. CTS processes more than one million work garments, seven million shop and printer towels and several hundred thousand gloves, mats and mops each week.
